Inscéal is delighted to announce that, AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) has been officially selected for the Sydney Film Festival. The critically acclaimed Irish-language feature film will be one of 12 films competing in the Official Competition of the festival in June.
AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) has also been acquired by independent Australian distributor, Madman Entertainment and will be released in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand later this year. This is the first time an Irish-language film has been released in these territories. Established in Melbourne in 1996, Madman Entertainment focuses on remarkable stories. They share films with audiences in Australia and New Zealand that transcend the screen; starting conversations, encouraging reflection and empowering change.
AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) is being jointly released by Break Out Pictures in 60 cinemas nationwide from tomorrow, Thursday, May 12 and Curzon in the UK on Friday, May 13.
The film, which had its world premiere at the prestigious Berlinale in February and scooped The Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury for Best Film has wowed critics and audiences alike. It won the Audience Award and Best Irish Film at the recent Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival and took home a staggering seven Irish Film and Television Academy awards at the recent IFTAs including BEST FILM, BEST DIRECTOR and BEST ACTRESS. Writer/Director, Colm Bairéad also won the Rising Star award.
Speaking on the Sydney Film Festival selection and the Madman acquisition, Colm Bairéad said "We are thrilled that An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) has been selected as one of the 12 films in Official Competition for this year's Sydney Film Festival. What an honour! And what a beautiful way to begin the film's journey throughout Australia and New Zealand, in partnership with our wonderful distributor, Madman Entertainment."
AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) tells the story of Cáit (Catherine Clinch) - a nine year-old girl from an overcrowded, dysfunctional family who is sent away to live with her mother’s relatives for the summer. She is welcomed with open arms by Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley), but her husband (Andrew Bennett) keeps Cáit at arms length. Slowly, but surely a warmth grows within this makeshift family and Cáit blossoms in their care. But in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.
Based on the acclaimed story, Foster by Claire Keegan, AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) is a complex and delicate coming-of-age drama that explores questions of family, neglect and loss through the eyes of its young protagonist.
AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) is the feature film debut of writer/director, Colm Bairéad and producer, Cleona Ní Chrualaoi of Inscéal. The film was funded by Screen Ireland, TG4 and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland as part of the Cine4 scheme. It was shot on location in Meath and Dublin in 2020.
