26th May 2022
Following rave reviews, awards and sold-out screenings, the Screen Ireland/TG4/BAI-backed AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) is making significant waves at the box office where it looks set to become one of the highest-grossing Irish films in recent years with an Irish UK box office of €400,000 since it opened on May 13. AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) is being jointly released by Break Out Pictures and Curzon.
This is a historical first for an Irish-language film to reach such heights in an increasingly difficult market and one that Director, Colm Bairéad is incredibly proud of.
Commenting on the success he said: "We've been overwhelmed by the response across Ireland and the UK to An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) from critics and audiences alike. People seem to have really taken the film into their hearts which means the world to us. Its success has proven that an Irish film, regardless of the language it's in, can truly connect with a cinema-going public at home and abroad. We look forward to continuing the extraordinary journey of An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) as it reaches out to more and more audiences around the world."
AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) was released across Ireland and the UK through Break Out Pictures and Curzon on 90 screens with significant word of mouth increasing the box office week on week with mid-week figures accounting for 62% of the box office, a very encouraging trend as the film enters its third week.
Speaking on the results, joint MD of Break Out Pictures, Robert McCann Finn commented “It is a fantastic result, we are hearing stories from cinemas of a cross-generational audience from all parts of Ireland and the UK loving the film. The film has over-indexed both rurally and outside the traditional weekend busy periods. It is a success story for the entire independent film and cinema sector.”
Louisa Dent, Curzon Film MD said “We’ve been delighted with the way audiences have responded to An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl). The film deserves all the acclaim and attention it has been getting. It has been a pleasure working with Colm, Cleona and the team at Break Out Pictures on this special film.”
AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) tells the story of Cáit (Catherine Clinch) - a nine year-old girl from an overcrowded, dysfunctional family who is sent away to live with foster parents for the summer. Despite a warm reception from the woman, Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley), the man of the house, Seán (Andrew Bennett), keeps his distance from Cáit and she from him, but over time, their strained relationship begins to deepen. Slowly, in the care of the Kinsellas, Cáit blossoms and discovers a new way of living. But in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.
Based on the acclaimed story, Foster by Claire Keegan, AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) is a complex and delicate coming-of-age drama that explores questions of family, neglect and loss through the eyes of its young protagonist.
AN CAILÍN CIÚIN (THE QUIET GIRL) is the feature film debut of writer/director, Colm Bairéad and producer, Cleona Ní Chrualaoi of Inscéal.
